Many people assume blurry vision is simply a normal part of aging. However, changes in vision can result from cataracts, an outdated prescription, dry eye, retinal disease, glaucoma, or another underlying eye condition. At Westchester Eyes, we do not recommend care based on symptoms alone. Our approach to cataract care begins with objective diagnostic testing to determine what is affecting your vision and how it should be managed.
A cataract develops when the natural lens inside the eye becomes cloudy. This clouding can prevent light from focusing clearly on the retina, leading to gradual changes in vision. Cataracts often progress slowly, which means patients may adjust to their symptoms without realizing how much their eyesight has changed.
Common cataract symptoms include:
These symptoms are not exclusive to cataracts. A detailed medical eye examination is necessary to identify the source of the problem and rule out other conditions.
During a cataract evaluation, we carefully examine the clarity of the eye’s natural lens and assess how vision changes are affecting daily activities. Testing may include visual acuity measurements, refraction, slit-lamp evaluation, pupil dilation, retinal examination, and additional imaging when clinically appropriate.
This objective information helps us determine whether cataracts are responsible for a patient’s symptoms, whether another eye condition is contributing, and how quickly the cataracts appear to be progressing. We also evaluate the health of the cornea, retina, optic nerve, and ocular surface because these structures can influence visual outcomes.
Not every cataract requires immediate surgery. Early cataracts may be monitored through scheduled eye examinations, particularly when vision remains functional and symptoms are manageable. An updated eyeglass prescription, improved lighting, or glare-reducing lenses may provide temporary support.
When cataracts begin interfering with driving, reading, work, or other daily activities, surgery may become the appropriate next step. Our recommendations are based on each patient’s examination findings, visual needs, lifestyle, and overall eye health rather than a one-size-fits-all timeline.
